A successful Construction Inspector has exceptional attention to detail-oriented characteristics and is responsible for the oversight and compliance using the project plans and specifications and enforcement of Quality Control, Environmental and Contractual standards. It requires the ability to work independently in field conditions, proactively engaging to coordinate schedule and oversee the contractor’s operations of work to ensure the highest industry standards are met. The Inspector will be responsible for review and monitoring of federal and state EEO/DBE documentation and compliance according to contract guidelines.

A qualified candidate will have minimum five years of field inspection experience working within the VDOT Road and Bridge standards and FHWA guidelines and possess the following certifications:

  • DEQ ESC Inspector
  • VDOT Cement Concrete Field
  • VDOT Soils and Aggregate
  • DCR/Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Desire people with concrete experience and soil testing experience to work on rebar inspections
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in field conditions.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • A minimum of five years of field inspection experience working on VDOT projects.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in construction methodologies including:

  • Transportation – Roadway and Bridge construction with concrete, soil testing, as well as erosion and sediment controls.  The ability to closely observe and record detailed documentation in Quality Control Testing procedures, Material Testing and Material Control tracking.
  • Experience requires detailed ability to review and monitor all work in conformance to the design specifications and all standard prevailing industry guidelines. Detailed ability to do material measuring and inventory controls tracking for measurement and payments, compile detailed daily inspection reports of work performed and project documentation maintain field sketches and as built drawings.
  • Strong reading comprehension skills with articulate communication abilities (both written and verbal).
  • Basic math skills for measurements and payments.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel for daily documentation, materials and payments.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Additional trade or industry-specific certifications such as CCM, NECEPT Concrete or Bituminous, NICET or ATSSA are a plus but not required.
  • Proficient ability to read and interpret complex plans and specifications and understand design processes.
  • Experience using VDOT Site Manager program a plus.
  • SharePoint and other documentation storage and management tracking software preferred .

Additonal Details:

  1. Regular Inspector hourly pay rate range is $ 20 to $ 27.50 an hour.
  2. Regular Inspector owner approved overtime hourly pay rate range is $ 30 to $ 41.25 an hour.
  3. Senior Inspector hourly pay rate range is $ 27.50 to $ 35.00 an hour.
  4. Senior Inspector owner approved overtime hourly pay rate range is $41.25 to $ 52.50 an hour.
  5. Also Belstar health care insurance coverage pays for 75 percent of the family health care cost.

Start date will be in June 2020.

The project duration is five (5) years.

The ideal candidate lives in the Hampton Roads area or is willing to relocate to the Hampton Roads area for a five year period.
